Overview

Instrument Name: Test of Early Language Development - 4

Abbreviation: TELD-4

Points for Consideration:

Concerns: dichotomous responses (yes/no) might not be as sensitive; no caregiver observational option.

Description of Tool:

The Test of Early Language Development - 4 is a ClinRO + PerfO developed for use in children aged 3 years 0 months to 7 years and 11 months (Language Development Disorders) to measure spoken language. The test yields Receptive Language and Expressive Language subtest index scores, as well as a Spoken Language index score. The number of items administered is age dependent.

Minimum Qualification Required by COA Administrator: MA or BA

Comment:

The TELD was originally based on Bloom and Lahey's (1978) model of language
The test yields Receptive Language and Expressive Language subtest index scores, as well as a Spoken Language index score
The number of items depends on the age of the child
2 forms (A and B) are available in the test. Online scoring available

Year: 2017

Objective of Development:

To measure spoken language in children ages 3 years 0 months through 7 years 11 months

Population of Development: Age range (therapeutic indication):

3 years 0 months to 7 years and 11 months (Language Development Disorders)

Pediatric Population(s) in which COA has been used:

TELD:
Otorhinolaryngologic Diseases ; Nervous System Diseases ; Pathological Conditions, Signs and Symptoms ; Congenital, Hereditary, and Neonatal Diseases and Abnormalities ; Mental disorders ; Digestive System Diseases ; Female Urogenital Diseases and Pregnancy Complications

COA type:

Number of Items Not reported

Mode of Administration:

Data Collection Mode:

Time for Completion: 15 to 45 minutes

Response Scales: Dichotomous 0 "Incorrect"/ 1 "Correct'

Summary of Scoring:

Available Scores:
Other:
Receptive and Expressive Language scores: Raw scores converted in quotient scores (depending on the age of the child)
Spoken Language Index scores: Sum of the Receptive and Expressive language quotient scores converted in the Spoken Language Composite Quotient Score
Quotients Receptive, Expressive and Spoken Language Index Scores can be converted in percentile scores
Raw Receptive and Expressive can be converted in Age Equivalents scores

Cut-off (For Receptive, Expressive and Spoken Language Quotient Scores):
Very poor (30-69); Poor (70-79), Below average (80-89), Average (90-110), Above average (111-120); Superior (121-130); Very Superior (131-165)

Weighting:
No

Score Direction:
Higher score = Higher spoken receptive, expressive and spoken language
